●NIH Studies |
|
Sept 17, 06:
The National Institutes of Health has launched 3 studies looking at aspects of
autism. They are designed to address:
- Potential different subtypes of autism spectrum disorders and related
treatments;
- The effectiveness of using the antibiotic minocycline, which has been
found to be effective in managing changes in the immune response that cause
inflammation in the brain.
- The widespread but unproven theory that autism may be treated
successfully by chelation therapy, which seeks to remove heavy metals from
the blood. This practice is based on the belief that many cases of
autism were caused by exposure to thimerosol, a mercury-based preservative
previously used in childhood vaccines.
