INDIVIDUAL TREATMENT FOR ADULTS

Overview

I primarily work with adults in individual therapy unless I feel that participation in a social skills group or family consultation would be beneficial.  Treatment is typically weekly, depending on the particular problem being treated.  Most of my adult referrals are for anxiety, impulse control, or social skill difficulties.

Treatment primarily utilizes a cognitive-behavioral therapy model, although I will often incorporate sessions that occur outside the office to practice managing anxiety or enhancing social competence.

Initial Assessment

Having a good understanding of the problem that led someone to seek treatment and identifying reasonable and achievable goals are my initial priorities.  It may take between 1-3  sessions to properly learn and determine what course therapy should take.  Sometimes I will ask clients to complete rating measures to help provide more information about certain symptoms, but usually we just talk in the office.  For people with social challenges, I may suggest that part of a session be spent outside as part of assessment.  Sometimes it's difficult to get a full sense in the office.

Treatment

As we move into the treatment phase, it is important to remember why someone is seeking treatment.  Some therapists plan on their clients working with them longer-term.  Most of my clients are interested in addressing the symptoms that led them to seek treatment.  Treatment varies, but most of my clients remain in therapy for 3 to 8 months.
